So You Think You Can Dance is a reality television show with a painstaking audition process for dancers before moving onto live shows, where viewers can get to call in and vote for their favorite. But this season, things are going in a different direction. So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation has been an instant success, in which dancers between the ages of 8 and 14 compete for a chance to win $25,000.

What is the format

A judgefrom the original show, Nigel Lythgoe, is still present, although he is now joined by singer, performer, and former American Idol judge Paula Abdul.

Rounding up the panel is musician Jason Derulo and child dancer 13-year-old Maddie Ziegler, famous for her work on the reality television show Dance Moms and her starring role's in singer Sia's controversial music videos. After an audition process, 100 kids were selected to attend what was called a "Dance Academy" where they trained and were narrowed down to a Top 10. Now that a Top 10 has been decided upon, however, the kids are paired up with an "All-Star"--i.e., a previous So You Think You Can Dance contestant that will mentor and perform with the children. The All-Stars helped select the finalists and chose which ones that they wanted to mentor.
