Before “Narcos” Season 2 is released by Netflix, Pablo Escobar’s brother Roberto wants to watch it. In a letter to the streaming service, he made a “formal, friendly” request to watch the second season strictly “on an informational basis.”

Based on true events

The Netflix series “Narcos” follows the rise and fall of the most notorious cocaine kingpin of all-time, Pablo Escobar. As the leader of a crime syndicate known as the Medellín Cartel, Escobar was responsible for nearly all of the cocaine illegally imported into the U.S. during the 1980s.

Netflix got it wrong

According to Roberto Escobar, his brother would never approve of the Netflix series as it is filled with deceptions and inaccuracies.

In a recent statement, the elder brother said he is the only person alive today that can verify its validity. At the height of the cartel’s power, Roberto was directly involved in the operation as its accountant and hitman.

Season 2 delay?

Roberto was not portrayed in the first season of the series. However, many speculate his character will make an appearance in Season 2. If Netflix complies with Roberto’s request, there is a small possibility the second season would be delayed if he finds something negative or incorrect about himself or the family. Some think Roberto's letter, sent from an undisclosed location in Colombia, may just be an attempt to get Netflix to share in the show profits.

Roberto owns Pablo Escobar

In 2015, Roberto registered for “successor-in-interest rights” to Pablo Escobar and the Escobar family name. Interestingly, this was the same year “Narcos” appeared on Netflix.

“We tried to contact Netflix after we had registered the rights to Pablo, prior to ‘Narcos’ being released with no response," said Olof K.

Gustafsson, CEO of Escobar Inc., according to Business Insider. "I think it is important that they recognize Roberto Escobar's wishes to review the show they are putting out, ensuring the family and viewers of an accurate portrayal of Pablo and Roberto."

Delay unlikely

Netflix recently announced “Narcos” Season 2 will premiere September 2.

The likelihood of any delays due to Roberto Escobar’s review request are slim. Since the beginning, the streaming service has made it clear that the show is a fictionalized version of Pablo Escobar’s life. The series stars Wagner Moura as drug overlord Pablo Escobar. Boyd Holbrook and Pedro Pascal also star.
