Katy Perry has released a new song, but it’s not one of the Grammy-winning singer’s typical pop tunes. Perry has released the power ballad “Rise,” which will be used as the theme for NBC’s broadcast of the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio.

A comeback for Katy

“Rise” is Katy Perry’s first new song since she released her 2013 album Prism, which featured her mega hit “Roar.” Nearly three years later, “Rise” is being touted as Perry’s comeback song. The powerful new song is produced by Music mastermind Max Martin. The accompanying video to “Rise” includes a dramatic montage of past Olympic athletes competing for the gold.

The timing for the new song worked out for Katy Perry, who said a in a statement that the song “Rise” has been “brewing” inside of her for years. The pop princess said the upcoming Olympics—and the current state of the world— inspired her to finish writing and recording the song now instead of holding on to it for her next album. Perry said that with all of the turmoil going on in the world right now, “there is a need for our world to unite,” and that the Olympic athletes in Rio can be a great example for everyone as they are healing and uniting together.

In her statement, Perry said she is “honored” that the network has chosen her song to be used as an anthem during the Olympic games, which will be watched worldwide. "I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together," Katy said of “Rise.”
