No stranger to strange TV, Katey Sagal is the newest member to be added to the cast of The Big Bang Theory.

CBS announced during Comic-Con on Friday that Sagal will be introduced as Penny’s mother, Susan, on the premiere episode of season 10.

It all started with a big bang

Katey’s career started with a big bang as Al Bundy’s wife on the long-running Married With Children, which aired from 1987 to 1997.

Cast as dim-witted Peg Bundy, opposite Ed O’Neill’s whacky shoe-salesman role, the couple were perfectly dysfunctional parents in a perfectly dysfunctional family.

However, even after a 10-year run as Peggy, Sagal had no problem shaking being typecast as a ditzy broad.

Katey pursued successful roles as slightly less sensational characters, such as Gemma Teller Morrow in Sons of Anarchy - a show written by Katey’s husband, Kurt Sutter.

Sagal also gained roles in 8 Simple Rules, and Mary. She also has a number of TV movie roles to her credit.

The mother/daughter team strikes again

Sagal’s role as Susan isn’t the first time she will have worked with Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny on The Big Bang Theory.

Sagal and Cuoco were also cast as mother/daughter in 8 Simple Rules. As the across-the-hall-neighbor who is now Lenny’s wife, Penny is probably the least oddball-ish of the oddball characters on the show.

And, while CBS hasn’t given any hints yet as to what type of persona her mother will portray, it’s a safe bet that Sagal has the range of acting ability to be able to pull it off splendidly.

Penny’s family continues to grow

Another addition to the show during season 10 will be Jack McBrayer, from NBC’s 30 Rock. McBrayer will be joining the cast as Randall, Penny’s brother.

His previous comedic experience in sketches on Late Night With Conan O’Brien as well as work with Comedy troupes will no doubt serve McBrayer well, as impeccable timing and delivery among the cast members are key factors in the success of The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory’s season 10 will premiere Monday, Sept. 19 on CBS.
