Game of Thrones season 6 is over and we will not see any new episode of Thrones until Spring 2017. What to do in the meanwhile? Here's a show that GOT fans could watch to fill the void!

The Last Kingdom.

The Last Kingdom is a British historical TV show which premiered on October 10, 2015. The show is an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's historical novels The Saxon Stories; is set in the 9th century AD when England was divided into seven kingdoms and the Danes attacked the Anglo-Saxon territory. The show features blood, battles and some very goodactors, but even if TLK is being treated as the BBC's answer to Game of Thrones, it actually presents some very important peculiarity, first of all, it is a historical show rather than a fantasy show.

The Last Kingdom season 1 trailer.

TLK's first season features 8 58 minutes-long episodes. Here's The Last Kingdom season 1 official trailer:

Plot summary: in the year 872 the invading Danes conquered many of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, leaving the kingdom of Wessex standing alone against the Danes. Uthred, son of a Saxon nobleman, is captured by the invaders and raised as a Danes. Forced to choose between his country and the people of his upbringing, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.

The critical reception.

The British show has met a positive critical response, with a 92% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 78 on Metacritic (without any mixed or negative review). Although we don't have an official release date for The Last Kingdom season 2, we know that the next season of the TV serieswill premiere in 2016.

Our opinion.

The Last Kingdom features fine actors, compelling battles, a strong historical plotline and a lot of Vikings. The show is not as addictive as Game of Thrones and looks derivative from time to time, but if you like the genre, you should totally take a look at TLK season 1 episode 1: it could be a very good way to deal with your Game of Thrones withdrawal!
