Derek Hough and Bindi Irwin won Dancing With The Stars season 21 last fall, and thanks to the talented 31-year old's creative work during their partnership, he has a chance to take home even more hardware. Hough is one of five artists nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Choreography, which will be awarded during the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 18. The full list of Emmy nominations was announced by Gilmore Girls actress Lauren Graham and Black-ish star Anthony Anderson on July 14.

Hough's road to the Emmys

Hough earned the nomination, his sixth in the category, for three dances that he performed with the then 17-year old Irwin.

The trio of numbers includes a Halloween-themed Argentine Tango set to Gerard McCann's "Cry Little Sister," a foxtrot to "Grace Kelly" by MIKA, and a tear-jerking freestyle routine set to Leona Lewis' "Footprints in the Sand." The three routines, which scored a cumulative 88 out of 90 possible points from Dancing with the Stars judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough, and Bruno Tonioli, are a representative sampling of Hough's extensive talent and creativity as a choreographer.

The other nominees for the 2016 Emmy for Outstanding Choreography include:

  • Travis Wall, So You Think You Can Dance, for "Beautiful Friends/November/Gimme All Your Love"
  • Anthony Morigerato, So You Think You Can Dance, for "Dibidy Dop"
  • Kathryn Burns, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, for "I'm So Good at Yoga/A Boy Band Made Up of Four Joshes/Settle For Me"
  • Quest Crew, America's Best Dance Crew, for "Runaway Baby/Take U There/Summer Thing"

He shared an image of himself with his "beautiful partner," and thanked her for inspiring his creativity. He also gave a "HUGE shout out" to the DWTS production team for "always bringing the choreographers ideas to life."

Others from the entertainment world were quick to offer up congratulations. Included in the mix was Olympic champion Nastia Liukin, who performed with Hough during season 20 and tweeted that the nom was "so amazing, but not at all surprising!"

Hough, who sat out Dancing with the Stars season 22 and whose future with the hit reality show is unknown, has previously taken home two wins in the choreography category. The first came in 2013, when he took the prize for the room-bending "Walking on Air," which he performed with Jaimie Goodwin, and two routines with season 15 partner Shawn Johnson: a quickstep to "Hey Pachuco" and "Para los Rumberos" mambo. The second Emmy win came in 2015, when he and sister Julianne and Tessandra Chavez's "Elastic Heart" tied for the honor with a trio of dances by So You Think You Can Dance mainstay Travis Wall.

DWTS scores 8 nominations

Derek Hough may be a choreography juggernaut, but he delivered just one of the eight Emmy nominations secured by the hit reality show, which will kick off its 23rd season in September. Dancing with the Stars also earned nods for Outstanding Reality Program, Reality Host (for Tom Bergeron), Technical Direction, Hairstyling, Costumes, Lighting Design, and Make-Up.
