Chance the Rapper has a chance at a 2016 MTVVideo Music Awards (VMA) nomination for Best Hip Hop video on collaborative album "Angels" with producer Saba. It first aired on the "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in October. The 23-year-old rising star is the creator of the Magnificent Coloring Day Chicago music festival which piggybacks on the success of his mixtape, featuring such music heavyweights as Kanye West, Skrillex, 2 Chainz, Alicia Keys, and John Legend. It also features Lil Uzi Vert, Tyler the Creator, and Young Thug.

Chance the Rapper in mixed company at VMA

Up for MTV VMA Best Hip Hop video alongside Chance the Rapper (born Chancelor Bennett) is an even mix of big names and new faces. 2 Chainz is up for"Watch Out" and "Hotline Bling" by Drake have been nominated for VMA hip hop. Newbies Bryson Tiller and Desiigner are up for their music videos "Don't" and "Panda." Chance's "Sunday Candy" gained notice for his soul-gospel rap blend of music. And Chance the Rapper may have a better chance at snapping up the impressive VMA Best Hip Hop trophy.

His ground-breaking Magnificent Coloring Day festival is drawing a lot of eyes and names. It bills itself as southside Chicago's "first ever music festival at U.S. Cellular Field." Bryson Tiller is up for a few more VMA titles as well, including best newcomer.

VMA lineup features many old, few new faces

Adele, Ariana Grande, Beyonce and Drake feature heavily in the 2016 Video Music Awards nominations.

Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Fergie get nods too. Old favorites Coldplay, Panic! At the Disco, and Fallout Boy (with Demi Lovato) have been nominated in the VMA Best Rock Video category. There's one superstar who surprisingly doesn't even get an honorable mention and that's Taylor Swift.Former One Direction boy band head Zayn Malik (now just Zayn) was recognized. Twenty-One Pilots, relatively new to stardom, snared a nomination.

And posthumously, David Bowie has been nominated for his final work "Lazarus" a weirdly apt video of the deceased Bowie as a corpse.
