Judi Dench revealed last year that she was considering getting a tattoo to mark her 80th birthday, and now it seems she went ahead and did get herself a tattoo, but for her 81st birthday. She said to Good Housekeeping magazine in 2015 “I am tempted to have a tattoo to mark my birthday. Finty’s very keen on me having one.

The 81-year-old British actress has just got a tattoo of the words “Carpe Diem” on her right wrist, the phrase means ‘seize the day’ which is exactly what she has done. The tattoo is actually a present for her birthday from her 43-year-old daughter Finty Williams who she says is “wonderful with surprises”.

Judi Dench got a tattoo of her motto

The Dame told Surrey Life magazine that “Carpe diem” is her life motto and has said that the tattoo confused her cast in The Winter’s Tale, “the company of A Winter’s Tale, which I was doing at the time, used to say that it said fish of the day.”

Dame Dench who is known for her acting career and role in James Bond had previously hinted that she wanted an Indian symbol tattoo “There’s an Indian symbol that I like which supposedly represents life and love and everything. One of the cameramen who worked on The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel told me what it meant, but I’m a bit nervous in case I’m being set up-It might be unbelievably rude.”

Judi Dench will carry on acting, even if her script is font size 22

The actress’ age is slowly taking its toll on her but she reveals that she doesn’t plan on letting it slow her down, instead she reveals that “on my scripts, my font is point-size 22, so you can imagine...it’s ridiculous, it’s a farce but I’m not going to give in.” She went on to explain that she finds it important to carry on doing what you do, “And if you give up one thing then it seems to me that you might as well give up another and so on, when it’s so much better to keep the mind active.”

Judi Dench is not the only veteran to get a tattoo, Helen Mirren also got a tattoo at around the age of 70 whilst she was drunk, she revealed “About six of us got them at the same time. Its a kind of mad bonding thing you do from time to time in your life. It was done with a safety pin and was very painful.”
