As per the early reports, X-Men: Apocalypse has crossed an estimated figure of $65 million during the Memorial Day weekend box office battle. On the other hand, Johnny Depp’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, which was also released over the holiday weekend, has somewhat tanked at the box office. It collected only $28.11 million.

There were huge expectations from both the Movies before release and it was expected to be a battle of two big budget movies over the Memorial Day weekend. But in the end, Apocalypse, produced by 20th Century Fox turned out to be the easy winner with basically a no show from Alice.

X-Men: Apocalypse received poor ratings from critics

The latest installment from the X-Men series, X-Men: Apocalypse, was not welcomed by the critics, but still managed to do good business over the weekend.

Before the release, both films were expected to do much better at the box office.

The box office collections of X-Men: Apocalypse are below par when compared to the previous installment of the X-Men series. Made at a budget of $178 million, the film has, however, collected $185.8 million worldwide. The film starred a lot of new faces along with the regular X-Men stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and others. The Distribution Head at Fox, Chris Aronson, said he is pleased with the overall performance of the movie.

More insult to injury for Johnny Depp

Alice Through the Looking Glass not only had to battle poor reviews, but also was hit by the controversy surrounding the lead actor Johnny Depp. Amber Heard, Depp’s wife, filed for divorce from the actor last week citing domestic violence.

Alice, the sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Alice in Wonderland, performed poorly at the box office over the holiday weekend. It is the first summer flop for Disney who was riding high with top performing films like The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War and Zootopia.

For actor Johnny Depp, it is another blow. His personal life is going from bad to worse, and now his movie Alice has bombed at the box office. Many believe that his female fans were not ready to watch his movie after Amber Heard made claims of domestic violence. Johnny Depp lost his mother and just a day after that, his wife Amber filed for divorce. Now, the debut of Alice is falling flat against another X-Men movie.

Angry Bird holds on to the third position

The Angry Birds Movie, in its second week, did reasonably well with a collection of $18.7 million and Captain America: Civil War continued the good run with $15.1 million in its fourth week collection. But X-Men: Apocalypse is at the top spot this week.
