Some very lucky Star Trek fans were treated to a celebration of the franchise’s 50th year. The Q & A event was hosted by fan Adam Savage of Mythbusters at the original Paramount lot Sound Stage 31.

The original Star Trek premiered in 1966

The original series first aired in 1966 and little did the studio and the cast members know that they were the beginning of what was to become a cultural icon that would span generations and many TV spin-offs and major motion pictures. The series was created by Gene Roddenberry, making him and the stars of the franchise household names.

His wife, Majel Barrett was the voice of the Enterprise computer and also starred in numerous episodes of the original series and subsequent spin-offs. A new TV seriesis slated to begin next year on CBS.

Trekkie Heaven on Sound Stage 31

The Friday evening event was filled with stars, fans,and members of the press. It was set to celebrate the franchise’s 50 years as well as the upcoming release of the next installment, Star Trek Beyondset to premiere at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 20 and then nationwide on July 22.

Stars of the most recent and current movie were on hand. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, producer J.J. Abrams and “Beyond” director Justin Lin (Fast and Furious). In honor of the 50th anniversary, 50 new alien creatures were created for Beyond, one them being a villain named Krall, played by Idris Elba. Attendees were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at some of the new creatures, as well as some of the extreme locations used in the making of the film.

Paramount names a street on the lot Leonard Nimoy Way

At the event, Zachary Quinto, who plays the part of Mr. Spock, originally played by Leonard Nimoy, had the honor of dedicating Leonard Nimoy Way. Quinto toasted the event with champagne and those in attendance raised a split-finger Vulcan salute to the actor and his character. Nimoy’s family was on hand also. Quinto later posted on his Instagram account that is was one of the most humbling experiences of his life and he considered it a great honor to do the dedication.

The evening started out with videos from celebrity fans revealing their Star Trek experiences. Stars of the current movie, Zoe Saldana (reprising her role of Lt. Uhura), Idris Elba (new villain), and Simon Pegg (engineer “Scotty”), plus singer Rihanna all shared tributes to the franchise.

The evening ended with the new trailer for the movie along with some additional scenes. It was definitely a night for Trekkies, tribbles and triumphs for the Star Trek universe.
