A futuristic, live action Sci-Fi show starring “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane is coming to Fox. On Wednesday, the network authorized production of 13 episodes of the new series. The series, yet unnamed, is supposedly about a crew of space explorers set 300 years in the future. They will be traveling aboard a somewhat dilapidated starship dubbed the "Orville."

Fox has been good to Seth MacFarlane

In a recent interview, MacFarlane said this is the kind of show he has wanted to do for a very long time and now the “timing finally feels right.” He noted that his relationship with Fox has been successful and coming to them with the show idea just made sense. The comedian pitched the show to Dana Walden and Gary Newman of Fox.

The pair has long supported MacFarlane and saw something unique about the series.

MacFarlane has a record of success

Fox and MacFarlane have had a long relationship going back to 1999 when the animated series “Family Guy” first aired. The show is now in its 13th season and is slated to continue for at least another year. MacFarlane is also the comedy genius behind other Fox shows including “American Dad!,” “The Cleveland Show,” and “Bordertown.” He is also the executive producer for the documentary series “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.”

In 2012, MacFarlane branched out into directing with the movie “Ted.” The comedy starring a talking, foul-mouthed bear became the highest-grossing original R-rated motion picture.

The “Blunt Talk” producer hosted the 85th Academy Awards and also received the nomination for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original song “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” in 2013.

Later this year, his booming vocal cords will be heard as the voice of “Mike,” a small mouse with a big attitude in the animated musical “Sing.”

The new Sci-fi series will air in the 2017-18 TV season, with the pilot episode being filmed sometime late in 2016. Each episode is expected to be 60 minutes long. In addition to a starring role, Seth MacFarlane will also write and produce the series.
