Actor Aml Ameen leaves Sense8

Back in June of 2015, the Netflix original series helmed by the Wachowskisiblings of "The Matrix" fame and fellow writer/creator Michael J. Straczynski ("Babylon 5") took the world of television by surprise. At that time, Sense8was unlike anything that had ever been put on TV or film, with a touch of Science Fiction, Action, Adventure, Drama, and no shortage of heart. What was perhaps even more impressive than the content itself was the way that the online community of fans rallied together around the show's central themes of togetherness, compassion, and an overall sense of unity that spanned continents, countries, timezones, and ideologies -- a connection that is still widely felt to this day.

It's safe to say that it came as quite a shock when it was announced that actor Aml Ameen (who plays Capheus in the series) had left the show and would not continue as the kind-hearted, optimistic driver from Nairobi, Kenya.

Ameen replaced by actor Toby Onwumere

While the details surrounding Ameen's departure have not been made public, it has been speculated that there was an ongoing conflict between Ameen and Lana Wachowski that had been brewing for some time and ultimately culminated in Ameen leaving the show.

What we do know for sure, however, is that his replacement, Toby Onwumere is a recent acting graduate of UC San Diego.

Fan reaction mixed, cautiously optimistic

While it certainly will not be the same for many fans who've grown personally invested in Ameen as Capheus, it seems that the consensus is not to rush to judgement too quickly and instead allow things to take their course.

Ameen certainly brought an energy and a spirit to his portrayal of Capheus, the perfect mix of optimism and child-like wonder coupled with an iron resolve to do what was necessary to protect the ones he loves. As Capheus said himself:“That day, I learned life and death are always so mixed up together, in the same way some beginnings are endings, and some endings become beginnings.” Here's to hoping that this ending becomes a beginning for both Ameen and the rest of the cast, crew, and creative team of Sense8.

While no definitive release date has been set for Season 2 of the Netflix original series, filming recently moved from India to Italy.
