The new Independence Day: Resurgence trailer has landed. It picks up twenty years from the events of the first Independence Day film, and there are some fresh faces and familiar friends that grace the two-minute long trailer.

New and old faces

The trailer starts with an introduction to the film's newcomers and how they connect to the original Independence Day cast. Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe) is the grown-up daughter of President Whitmore (Bill Pullman), a.k.a. the best movie president ever. Originally, Patricia was played by 8-year old Mae Whitman, but speculation is that producers passed on Whitman because she wasn't "hot" enough for the film's love story. The new Patricia is dating hunky fighter pilot, Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) in a very Armageddon-like twist.

The apple apparently doesn't fall far from the tree, because fans will recall that President Whitmore was a fighter pilot turned president in the first film.

Speaking of fighter pilots, Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher) is also a pilot and the son of the now deceased Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith).  As for Smith there is no mention of how his character died in the trailer, but the actor opted not to return to the film franchise because he chose to do After Earth instead. It's certain that fans will miss him dearly, but they do have the consolation prize of Vivica A. Fox reprising her role as Dylan's mother.

As for the rest of the cast, Jeff Goldblum returns as the neurotic scientist David Levinson and Sela Ward is the new President of the United States. Her voiceover can be heard throughout the trailer, and is both a nod to Pullman's incredible presidential speech in the first film and maybe a pledge of support to Hillary Clinton - Ward sounds exactly like her in diction and demeanor.

The only thing she's missing is the blond hair.

Explosions, aliens and spoilers are all in a day's work

On to the good stuff. The trailer is epic, to put it mildly. Many remember the grand scale devastation shots from the first film and watching the massive, Texas-sized alien spaceships crash to earth. It's all there. The trailer has the fighters, the leaders, the love story and the alien crisis.

It takes place 20 years after the original invasion and all of the former players are gathering to celebrate the anniversary. What they don't know is that in the twenty-year lull, the aliens were regrouping and planning another massive attack. Now it's up to Morrison and Hiller to lead the assault against the resurgent aliens under the guidance of Levinson and former President Whitmore.

However, there might be a spoiler in the trailer. There is a scene where President Whitmore is the examining room, the same room from the first film where the mad scientist tried to dissect an unconscious alien.

Whitmore disappears into a cloud of white smoke, and then we see his daughter crying. It looks like a self-sacrifice scene à la Armageddon where Bruce Willis' character takes one for the team and his daughter is seen crying while saying goodbye. Hopefully, President Whitmore won't pull a Harrison Ford and kill off an iconic character. Independence Day: Resurgence opens July 4, 2016 in theaters nationwide.
