There appears to be a new trend in local news. Anchors are adding pop culture into the normal stale newscast and racking up likes on social media. Last week a group of news anchors sneaked rap lines from "A Tribe Called Quest" into their broadcast and on Thursday, March 30th, Fox 32 Chicago had actor Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers") play weatherman during its broadcast.

Wet weather, dry joke

The British actor plays Loki in the "The Avengers" and "The Avengers: Age of Ultron." His character is the main villain, wannabe heir to the throne of the mythical king of Asgaard, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and brother to the god of thunder, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the rightful heir.

Of the two villains in the superhero series, Loki is the most popular. So naturally, the weather team at FOX 32 couldn't resist the opportunity to have Loki be a guest weatherman and give his take. Hiddleston joked, "The god of thunder has brought his skill set to bear on the local weather."

The humor was dry at best and most people liked the clip because it was the Avengers' arch nemesis delivering the weather report and not because the joke was actually funny. It only seemed appropriate because Chicago is expecting rain and snow during the first full week of April and the weather team decided to make a joke of it. They used Loki to blame a false god for the weather rather than attribute it to God like most newscasts normally do in the event of a lighting storm, such as in the case when Donald Trump's Trump Towers were struck by lightning on the night of the Illinois primary last month.

The joke was good enough for it to go viral and trend on Facebook. Plus, the newscasters had a blast taking selfies backstage.

Brothers in dry comedy

However, Hiddleston was not the only Avenger to crack a joke on television. Hemsworth also told a joke on the Graham Norton show that was a bit on the dirty side. Hemsworth was explaining how people come to him and tell him Thor jokes. He shared one on the show that was cheeky but it garnered more laughter than Hiddleston's joke. The joke was about Thor and his woman's reaction after spending a steamy night together. You can view the joke by watching the video, but don't worry. It's not so salacious that you'll get in trouble for watching it without headphones.

From the looks of it, it's safe to say that Hemsworth won the joke war but not by much. Hemsworth told a joke that can be repeated to your friends at a party and Hiddleston did a video that will make fan boys look cool if they share it on Facebook. Still, both jokes only need to be shared once to avoid overkill territory. Mostly, both jokes really just makes fans wonder when the next "Avengers" movie is coming out. Sadly, "Avengers: Infinity War" won't be out until 2018 but fanboys can still watch both actors in "Thor: Ragnarok" in 2017.
