Harrison Ford will be back for the fifth time as "Indiana" Jones. Disney announced that Steven Spielberg will direct the latest installment of the series, inspired by the old serial cliffhangers. George Lucas came up with the idea for the original film, Raiders of the Lost Ark,naming Indiana after his own dog.

There Can Be Only One.. or Could There?

Ironically, while Spielberg says, "There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford,” Ford was only cast at the last minute, just three weeks prior to shooting.

Originally, the actor Tom Selleck was the first choice. But due to the popularity of his Magnum PI television series on CBS, Selleck was not available.

Now it’s hard to imagine anyone than Harrison Ford in the role of “..one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history,” as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn, puts it. “..we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. But are the physical demands of acting, never mind the action-oriented nature of Indiana Jones, asking too much of a 73-year-old actor?

When is It Simply Asking Too Much

Asked whether he got emotional putting on the costume for his other iconic hero, Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ford simply said, “no, I got paid.”

On the recent shoot of the sci-fi film, the veteran actor was injured when a hydraulic door hit him on set. Besides requiring surgery, Ford took two months to recover before the film crew was even allowed to shoot from the waist up.

Other franchises have seen multiple actors playing a title role - the most famous, of course, the James Bond series. Most recently,Daniel Craig has brought his version of the British secret agent 007 to the big screen.

Some may argue that this is due to the superficial nature of Hollywood’s emphasis on appearance, but what about the natural effects of aging versus the injury prone nature of action films?

Yet, producer Frank Marshall insists that Lucasfilm was “not doing the Bond thing where we’re going to call somebody else Indiana Jones.”
