George Martin has passed away at the age of 90. As soon as word spread, there was confusion over the internet. Some thought that it was the author, George R.R. Martin, that inspired the HBO Game of Thrones series, who had passed away.

Besides two letters the two Martin’s were separated at birth by 23 years. While the Queen knighted the Music producer in 1996, and it's no secret the Royal Guards has even played the Game of Thrones theme song outside Buckingham Palace, she has yet to bestow this honor on the author George R.R. Martin - although Queen Elizabeth II has visited the set.

Case of Mistaken Identity Cause Fans to Panic

Some fans were relieved “I'm sorry to hear that #GeorgeMartin has died but I'm glad I was mistaken in thinking it was  #GeorgeRRMartin” - @stforce1

Others were fearful “RIP George RR Martin.

So sad that he never finished his book. X” - @TheRickyV

“SOMEONE NAMED “GEORGE MARTIN” DIED AND I THOUGHT IT WAS GEORGE R R MARTIN AND I ALMOST SCREAMED IN CLASS” - @savageturtles

But sadly, many didn’t realize the important role the man affectionately known as the “fifth Beatle” played in the rise and stardom of the iconic rock band.

Different Creative Journeys Across Time

It was Martin, who suggested putting a string quartet on “Yesterday,” while a young George R.R. Martin won his first award for a short story - the first of many to come.

Paul McCartney initially resisted saying, “Oh no George, we are a rock and roll band and I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

McCartney shares, “With the gentle bedside manner of a great producer he said to me, ‘Let us try it and if it doesn’t work we won’t use it and we’ll go with your solo version’.” The rest, as they say, is history.

“Yesterday” was once recognized by Guinness World Records as the most recorded song; it was also the 4th most successful song of all-time in terms of royalties paid, (a total of £19.5 million,) according to the BBC.

“The world has lost a truly great man..." tweeted Paul McCartney.

“If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George,” McCartney said on his blog.

Surviving George Martin is his wife, Judy Martin, and their four children.
