Harper Lee, author passed away peacefully in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama,

Most of the world only know the author through her writing in To Kill a Mockingbird -her first and (for years) her only novel which sold over 40 million copies over the years, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and the film adaption won Oscars.

For years, there were rumors of Lee’s next book, but nothing appeared. Some like Wayne Flynt, friend and professor emeritus at Auburn University, speculated “that there are some writers who have one great story to tell and they tell that one great story."

Then, last year Go Set a Watchman appeared.

At first, this novel was appeared to be a sequel to Mockingbird set several years after the original story. Eventually, it was revealed to be an earlier work that was shelved in favor of the beloved classic.

Hollywood and the World’s Attention on a Literary Legend

In honor of Lee, Oprah Winfrey posted on Twitter, “I always wanted to interview her. She said" honey I already said everything I had to say".

While Harper Lee developed a reputation for being a “recluse,” Jessica Lacher-Feldman, Lee’s right hand at University of Alabama public events from 2001-6 told TIME magazine that Lee “didn’t set out to write the book of the century …She said that Lee really just wanted to live her life, and thought that the quieter somebody is, the more people speculate.

But What Else Was Harper Lee Meant to Write

According to Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the bestseller Big Magic and her own runaway success, Eat Pray Love. Lee’s response in 1962 when asked about writing other books was “I’m scared.. when you’re at the top, there’s only one way to go.” Gilbert contends that the author may have been “pinned beneath the boulder of her own reputation."

Further, Gilbert says that she wished someone had been able to convince Lee to keep writing and to keep publishing, ”It would have been a gift to the world.

And it would have been a gift to her, as well, to have been able to remain a writer, and to have enjoyed the pleasures and satisfactions of that work for herself (because in the end, creativity is a gift for the creator, not just a gift to the audience.)”

The World is Left to Wonder

Now, all we can do is speculate what stories are lost with who President Obama described as “a country girl who just wanted to tell an honest story about life as she saw it..

..that "more powerfully than 100 speeches possibly could.. change the way we saw each other, and then the way we saw ourselves."

Indeed, we're left to wonder what other stories that Harper Lee could have told "through the uncorrupted eyes of a child,”
