There is very heavy competition for in the Best Actress award category at this year’s Oscars. Five great names were announced and now only one of them will get the greatest honor in the film industry. This list details the nominees and the work that won them the nomination.

Cate Blanchett

A fan favorite, Cate Blanchet is one of the main actresses on the movie Carol, a title she shares with Rooney Mara. Mara, by her own right, tied for the Best actress in the Cannes Film Festival. Blanchett plays Carol Aird, a woman trying to keep her daughter’s guardianship after a messy divorce, who is also starting to fall in love with Therese Belivet.

Trying to keep her ex-husband to evoke a morality clause, Carol loves Therese but tries to stay away and hide her homosexuality.

Brie Larson

Along with Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and Sean Bridgers, Brie Larson is the nominee for the movie Room. Really pushing it to the extreme, making viewers laugh and cry, she plays the role of Joy Newsome, mother of young Jack. After  five long years imprisoned, they are freed from the captivity of an old man who used to constantly rape Joy.

Now, taking her son into the real world for the first time, she experiences much of what she had already started to forget.

Jennifer Lawrence

Capable of mobilizing great crowds to see every single part of hers, no matter how small, Jennifer Lawrence is being nominated for her work in the movie Joy. Lawrence plays Joy Mangano, a creative young woman that takes care of her family and goes on to launch a very successful product and built a company around it.

Facing lots of challenges in the way, she eventually becomes somewhat like Lori Greiner, mentoring young, strong woman and making a fortune on QVC.

Charlotte Rampling

Charlotte Rampling has already won the Silver Bear award for Best Actress for this role and is on track to win the Oscars too. A beautiful performance in the movie 45 years as the protagonist Kate Mercer, she really sets the film’s beautiful tone and mood. A peculiar artist you just can’t stop paying attention to.

Saoirse Ronan

Ending this great list, Saoirse Ronan plays Eilis Lacey, a young woman who emigrates from Ireland and goes to New York, in the movie Brooklyn. There she lives a strong and intense love story with Anthony Fiorello, but eventually needs to get back to her small town. After a little while she understands there could be no life for her there and returns to Brooklyn.
