Leonardo DiCaprio will be nominated for an Academy Award again as the protagonist of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s monumental movie, The Revenant. The actor is usually predicted to be one of the favourites but he still hasn’t managed to win the Award. For his film roles he has been nominated for the Academy Award five times, and the Golden Globe ten times.

He won two of the latter in the following categories: Golden Globe Award for the best male protagonist in a film drama (The Aviator) and Golden Globe Award for the best male protagonist in a musical or comedy (The Wolf of Wall Street). According to Box Office Mojo – a website dealing with the statistics of box office tracking – DiCaprio has already earned an income of $2.3 billion, and he is listed among the highest earning actors in the world.

But the fans of Star Wars are probably more interested in the story of why DiCaprio didn’t get the role of Anakin Skywalker in the antecedent trilogy.

At the time of Attack of the Clones there were a lot of rumours about DiCaprio (who had already starred in movies like Titanic, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Beach) wanting to play Anakin, but he didn’t get on offer from the production studio. The actor clarified the old rumours in a recent interview:

“We talked about it with George Lucas once, but in the end, I was the one who said no. That moment, I simply felt like I was not ready for that”.

In 2002, the same year Attack of the Clones was released, DiCaprio's career was just taking off. Gangs of New York, his first movie with director Martin Scorsese, was released – this exciting actor-director partnership would go on to produce several great movies.

That same year, Catch Me if You Can, directed by Steven Spielberg, was also released. Two years later DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in The Aviator.

We will never know what Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith would be like if, instead of the almost unknown Hayden Christensen, the already famous Leonardo DiCaprio had played Anakin Skywalker. But it seems like one of the brightest stars of Hollywood made a good decision when he turned down the offer what would have been a dream role for many actors.
