Fans of the renowned Japanese animation film production company Studio Ghibli were more than a little bit concerned when the studio went on hiatus after the retirement of one of its directors, Hayao Miyazaki. That was in 2014; now many should be relieved to hear that Studio Ghibli is making a comeback in 2016 with The Red Turtle, an animated film project it is co-producing with the French studio Wild Bunch.

Many years of success

Studio Ghibli was founded by Yasuyoshi Tokuma, along with directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and a director, Toshio Suzuki after the success of Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in 1984.

Since its first animated feature film Castle in the Sky in 1986, Studio Ghibli has found great success in many films such as My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Spirited Away (2001). Spirited Away was Studio Ghibli’s most successful film, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2002 and coming to be known by many as one of the world’s best animated movies. The last movie that Studio Ghibli produced before Miyazaki’s retirement was the 2014 animated film When Marnie was There.

Studio Ghibli is best known in the United States for Disney English adaptations, starring many acclaimed American actors and actresses, such as Betty White (Ponyo), Dakota Fanning (My Neighbor Totoro), and Christian Bale (Howl's Moving Castle).

The Red Turtle

The artistic producer of The Red Turtle will be Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and previous director of several Ghibli films, including Grave of the Fireflies (1988).
