Actor Morgan Freeman, 78, escaped injury Saturday when his private plane, an Emivest SJ-30, was involved in an emergency landing. Morgan Freeman was riding in his plane with his pilot when the emergency landing was required. The plane had a tire blow as it was taking off requiring the emergency landing at a nearby airfield. The pilot made a controlled forced landing but the landing gear collapsed and they ended up off the runway.


The incident occurred at 6:15 p.m. local time in Mississippi.

They were flying from Freeman’s home in Clarksdale, Mississippi via Fletcher Field in Lyon and were going to Houston, Texas, when the accident occurred. The plane was forced to land in Tunica, at an airport around 36 miles from Clarksdale. Neither Freeman nor his pilot were hurt, but the plane sustained some damage.

Emergency landing on route to Texas for TV series shoot

According to Morgan Freeman, he was heading to Texas to do some filming for a new TV series, “The Story of God,” in which he stars as host.


Freeman was not piloting the plane at the time, and credits his pilot’s excellent flying skills with ensuring the plane was able to land so that neither of them were injured and arrived safe and sound.

The actor is well-known for playing parts in “The Shawshank Redemption,” as well as “Driving Miss Daisy,” and “Seven,” along with “Invictus.” He was also awarded an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the 2004 movie “Million Dollar Baby.” With his distinctive voice, he has been popular for voice-over work and made his directorial debut in 1993, and most recently directed an episode of the TV series “Madame Secretary.”

Freeman thanked everyone for their well wishes and prayers for their safety, and gave thanks to Jimmy Hobson, the plane pilot.

He said the accident was just one of those things that happens sometimes and when the tire blew out, it caused other problems to occur.

Another plane in Tunica was sent to pick Freeman up and he was flown to his destination in Texas so he could do the required filming of his upcoming TV series. Freeman was glad about being unscathed, but lamented the shape his plane was in. An inspector was scheduled to look at it on Sunday.

Coincidentally, Freeman is a pilot, and has taken flying lessons from Hobson. Additionally, Freeman has flown his own private jet for the past few years. He says that Hobson is a great instructor and that he has been having fun learning to fly and flying on his own. He says he flies his plane whenever he has the time. Morgan Freeman is known for his smooth baritone voice and calm demeanor, and it appeared that he took this latest mishap as just par for the course.
