After having seen a hilarious preview of Minions at the movie theatre, I was really looking forward to this movie. I noticed it was off to a record-breaking start at the box-office, another great success for Universal!

The movie started with telling the story of the origin of the cute little creatures, how they evolved from the ocean and spent millions of years searching for the most despicable master possible. At first it was one laugh after another. The Minions managed to accidentally kill every single master they found. They went through a dinosaur, a Neanderthal, Dracula - but causing Napoleon's death got them into trouble, and they eventually ended up in an ice cave, where they lived many years, sinking into a deep depression.

They lived without a purpose and had no master to serve. But then one of them, Kevin, gets the idea to save his fellow Minions, and he sets out with Bob and Stuart to find a new evil master. Which brings them from the ice cave to New York, to Villain-Con in Orlando where they find Scarlett Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock, and finally to London.

It was a cute story, and the timing of the release date during the San Diego Comic-Con was very clever, but in my opinion the movie ran out of steam sometime after the first 20 minutes. It started to drag a bit, and that had nothing to do with it being an animated or a kid's movie. I'm not even sure if it would be appropriate for a younger audience.

Many references to The Beatles or Abbey Road would not be understood, and there are a few scary scenes like getting chased by an evil man with a chainsaw into a telephone booth.

At the end of Minions I felt slightly disappointed, and I am not surprised that the movie has gotten very mixed reviews on Fandango and only a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Overall it had a great beginning and the end closed the circle by showing how the Minions ended up with Despicable Me as their new master, but the majority of the movie felt a bit thin and flimsy. Maybe it was just too much of a good thing and Minions should only be consumed in small doses?

I think there was a reason I loved the teaser trailer so much, it was only three and a half minutes short!
