A terrifying reality

We are faced with something unprecedented in American politics. Our system for electing presidents has been interfered with by a foreign nation, Russia. American intelligence agencies have "high confidence" that Russia interfered with the 2016 elections. Despite the fact that our President-elect seems to want to ignore this data, this interference is a serious problem. We cannot allow Russia to decide the fate of the United States of America. At this point, we may be stuck with the results they've steered us toward. But what exactly can we do about Russia's hacks and the distribution of misinformation?

It has recently become clear that the Russians did not only hack the Democrats. They also hacked the Republican National Committee -- but they did not release this information online as they did with the information they gleaned from Democrat sources. Despite the word of the CIA, Trump and his cohorts deny that any Russian hacking occurred. It may be difficult for them to realize that Russian hacks contributed to their winning the election, but they must realize the truth.

A party divided

Much of the Republican party stands at odds with Trump on this issue. Senator John McCain and Senator Lindsey Graham, both of the Republican party, issued a press conference calling for a bipartisan probe into Russian influence on the 2016 election.

In their joint statement, they said that the CIA's report "“should alarm every American.”

What can you do?

What we need to do is get alarmed. I know that Americans are tired. We've just suffered through a long and disappointing election. You may feel like you are all out of outrage. But this issue is important.

People need to stand up, write their congressmen, and tell them that you care about Russia's hacking. We need to put pressure on the government -- especially as it switches over to Trump and his new group of politicians. They need to know that this is an issue we will not back down on.

So now you know what you can do.

But what can the government do? How do you punish a country for interfering in your election? I say we hack them back. It has a certain poetry to it. That and/or we impose harsh trade sanctions. There must be severe consequences for this.
