The wizarding world of "Harry Potter" started out as books and then expanded into movies to universal acclaim from 2001-2011, and now a spin-off prequel series has started off strongly.

The world of Harry Potter is one that is enjoyed by many people around the world

The magical world of "Harry Potter" came back on November 17th when "Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them" opened in theaters. The new movie is based on the spin-off book of the same name released by JK Rowling, alongside "Qudditch Through the Ages" and the "Tales of Beedle the Bard." Though this one doesn't feature any of the original cast, the new cast do an amazing job.

The movie has been so well received that it has grossed 474 million dollars worldwide as of its 2nd weekend in theaters. I saw the movie last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie is written by JK Rowling and directed by David Yates who also directed the last 4 Harry Potter movies in the popular franchise.

The start of a 5 movie franchise

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is the first film in a planned 5 movie franchise that will cover the story of the first wizarding war and the rise of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald that covers a 20 year period. The movie starts out with Newt Scamander, portrayed by Eddie Redmayne arriving in 1926 New York City by boat from the United Kingdom.

He has come to New York because he wants to write a book about magical creatures and he seeks to release some creatures he has brought with him in his suitcase in Arizona where he plans to go next after he is done in New York.

The movie introduces the North American Ministry of Magic and offers a glimpse of the magical world in North America.

From what was shown in the film, it is similar to the magical world in Europe that was the basis for the 8 Harry Potter movies and 7 books. They even talk about the North American School of Magic called Ilvermorny. The movie introduces Gellert Grindelwald, portrayed by Johnny Depp and Colin Farrel as his disguise Percival Graves.

Ezra Miller is also a star of the film, his character Credence Barebone plays a major role in the movie and is discovered to be the obscurus, a dark magical force that Grindelwald is looking for.

The movie also has references to the Harry Potter movies with the term muggle returning and Albus Dumbledore being mentioned during a scene. It also introduces a new term, No-Mag, which is the North American equivalent of the term Muggle for those who aren't witches and wizards.

A magical future

The future of this new spin-off series looks to be good, as it has been well received by critics and people who saw the movie. It currently holds a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I am looking forward to the next movies in the franchise, and am eager to learn more about Newt's story as well as Gellert Grindelwald.

The next movie is slated to be released in 2018 and will continue the story told in the first movie.
