The Library of Congress no longer uses “illegal aliens” as a bibliographical term. They now use “noncitizens” and “unauthorized immigration”. They think “illegal aliens” is offensive to some people.

I recently wrote an article about the trouble I have communicating with others without being offensive. I don’t intend to be offensive, but others take offense because I’m not up to date on what is, “PC”, politically correct.

PC seems to change daily

No sooner than the article was published I was informed that even my title, I am not judgmental of sexual preference, race, or religion, was offensive.

It’s offensive according to some because I should have said “sexual orientation” instead of “sexual preference”.

According to the critics, their sex is not a preference because they don’t choose to be the way they are. They just are the way they are.

Other orientations

I was also informed that there are several designations for various types of orientations, which I have never heard of. This is in addition to the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders I’m familiar with. I would name these, but I can’t remember the names. It appears to me, the other terms apply to a mix or blend of the above orientations.

Once again, I am not judging. I’m just pointing out how hard it is for an old guy to learn the changes in terminology. I mistakenly say the wrong thing because I simply don’t know the proper term.

Classic car terms

When discussing my 66 Ford, my wife sometimes refers to the starter as the “cranking thing” or the carburetor as the “gas sucker”. She is not being offensive to my car or its parts, she just doesn’t know the correct terms because she is not a mechanic.

Also, the article in question mentioned aliens being from Mexico rather than outer space. It seems apparent now, that I should have said “noncitizens”.

The more I try, the more confused I get, and the more I’m considered judgmental. You can judge me as uninformed or mentally challenged, but don’t call me judgmental. That is offensive to me.

Stay calm

What am I supposed to do now? I will try not to be offensive.

I will try to learn the lingo. When I don’t know the proper word to use, I will try to be quiet.

A better solution in my opinion; however, would be for everyone to just take a long breath and calm down. You know the saying, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
