Are you in a state where you think nothing's working out, and you know there's something you should do but don't know where to begin? You tune out your friends and family when they try to cheer you up because you think they don't understand. The only thing you want is just to be left alone and think -- or cry. But, that's absolutely the worst decision! Seriously. The fact is that when you're in this state of mind, you can't think straight. You won't find any solution and, moreover, things will just get worse. You might think I don't know what I'm talking about, or that you don't care because nobody's in your situation, but, if you give it a try, you'll find out that it really works.

Do not stay alone

That's a basic rule. The most important (and frankly, the most helpful). Even though I know it's actually the only thing you want at that moment, you must avoid it. If people are constantly bugging you and asking to go somewhere with them, go. Even just for a walk. The thing is that you must not think. Focus on the present. Listen to what's being said, and, if you feel up to it, join in on the conversation.

Play with children

This is mostly for parents, of course. You know that children take all of your attention whether you want them to or not, and this forces you to put a smile on your face and focus on activities which will keep your mind off of the intrusive thoughts swimming in your head.

Read Aloud

I know, it may sound silly when I said that you can't stay alone at first, but we all know that sometimes there's nobody around. Pretend that you're reading for someone. The point is to focus on what you're doing. When you read out loud, you have to control your speed and pronunciation, and, by doing so, you keep your mind busy -- even if it's a Children's book.

Do something

Anything that requires you to give your attention and focus. If you have any hobbies, it'll be much easier because hobbies are generally a good way to forget about your problems. It could be something as mundane as cooking or cleaning your house, but, ultimately, anything to keep your mind busy is worth doing. Find a hobby that you enjoy (and that you're truly passionate about) and go do it. Sometimes, it really does come down to putting one foot in front of the other, and, in this case, anywhere you end up will be better than where you were.


Whether you find yourself out with people you know intimately, or people you don't know at all, don't forget to smile, joke, and pretend everything's perfect. Even if you have to force the smiles and the jokes, if you stick with it long enough and pretend you're having a good time, you might just end up having one after all. We all need distraction, an escape from our reality, but, if you take baby steps and walk toward the reality you wish to inhabit, eventually, you'll get there. At the end of the day, one foot in front of the other will get you to your destination a lot faster than standing still, and even if you don't know exactly where you're going, the fact that you're going at all is something to be proud of.
