As the White House deals with the backlash following the release of Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury" book exposing behind the scenes drama about the president's first year in office, Donald Trump and his team are doing whatever they can to deflect from the news at hand. After Trump took credit for the drop in unemployment in the African-American community, critics on social media wasted no time firing back.
Trump on Twitter
Over the last year, the economy has moved along at a steady pace, as the job market continues its trend left by the Obama administration while the stock market reaches record highs. As expected, Donald Trump has taken credit for the positive news and has made sure to let everyone know that he is the reason for the uptake. Whether it's himself pushing the talking points or members of his administration, the former host of "The Apprentice" has used the positive economy as a way to deflect from other issues plaguing the White House, including the release of Michael Wolff's new book and the ongoing Russian investigation.
During a tweet on January 6, Trump highlighted the current low unemployment rate among African-Americans.
During his busy morning on Twitter, Donald Trump cited an article from the Washington Post that addressed the job market, including the record low unemployment among African-Americans. "The African American unemployment rate fell to 6.8%, the lowest rate in 45 years," Trump tweeted out. "I am so happy about this News!" he wrote. "And, in the Washington Post (of all places), headline states, 'Trumps first year jobs numbers were very, very good,'" Trump concluded. Following his tweet, it didn't take long to get push back.
Instant reaction
Within seconds of his post on Twitter, Donald Trump was hammered by the opposition.
"Did you know that Obama created more jobs in Year 1 than you did?" one tweet read.
"Trump is a vile racist!" Bishop Talbert Swan tweeted, before later adding, "Amazing, someone who thinks Nazis and white supremacist are 'very fine people' taking credit for the unemployment rate of a population that he thinks has a trait of laziness! Hypocrite!" "But that’s fake news. So I guess that doesn’t count eh?" another tweet read in response to Trump using the Washington Post as his source despite calling the paper "fake news" for over a year.
"If you paid black people in America their overdue reparations they would be able to start businesses and the the unemployment rate would fall even more. They need help and opportunities so that they can build," a follow-up tweet added. "You conspired to win, now you're taking the Republican Party down with you. That'll be your fame. That & being dumb as a rock," yet another social media user wrote.
