Pardon would protect Clinton

Donald Trump has made no secret of how he feels about the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server to conduct official business while she was Secretary of State. “If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation,” Trump told Clinton during one of their debates. Since Congressman Trey Gowdy interviewed FBI director James Comey (in which Comey admitted that Clinton had violated several laws related to espionage and the improper storage, transmission, and copying of classified or sensitive material, yet determined that there was not enough evidence of intent to break the law for her to be charged with a crime), Trump has been eager to see Clinton prosecuted for the crimes that many feel she committed.

Lame duck pardon likely

Since Trump has just won the presidency, a full investigation into Clinton’s email server is a real possibility. When asked if there was a way Clinton could avoid prosecution, Rudy Giuliani said, “there's one way. If in his lame duck status Obama gives her a pardon.” A pardon would expunge Clinton from any crimes related to the email server.

Pardons for everyone

Don’t think Obama would do it? Consider this: the Washington Times says that they expect the sitting President to “continue his record-setting pace of commutations” and grant clemency to even more people than he already has this year. Obama has pardoned 688 convicts in 2016 alone, "more than the previous 11 presidents combined," the White House recently blogged.

This is a somewhat startling number, and should give some insight into whether or not Hillary Clinton will be pardoned. The likelihood is very high that Obama will shield Clinton from any possible future charges stemming from the email server. Of course, this would also include pardons for many of her closest aides; it seems that nobody from her inner circle will be charged for anything.

The pardons wouldn’t extend to the players in the investigation into Clinton’s involvement in public corruption regarding the Clinton Foundation.
