House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi beat back an insurrection against her status as leader of the House Democrats, winning 134 to 63 against Rep. Tim Ryan. That Pelosi has presided over the decimation of the House Democratic caucus seemed to matter less than party loyalty. Pelosi will lead the tattered, decimated ranks of her party as part of a leadership team who are in their 70s. The happiest with the results, according to Hot Air, were Republicans.

Kellyanne Conway quipped tartly on Twitter, “What a relief. I was worried they had learned from the elections & might be competitive and cohesive again.” The National Republican Congressional Committee endorsed Pelosi for Democratic leader.

The most significant aspect of the vote was not that Pelosi prevailed. The outcome was expected since the vast majority of House Democrats are coastal liberal elites just like her.

The real story was that a third of the House Democratic caucus read the results of the last four elections correctly and concluded that it was time for younger leadership with fresher ideas.

House Democrats are learning the bitter truth of what it is like to be in the minority. Republicans used to be part of a permanent minority for about 40 years until the Gingrich Revolution of 1994. Since then the GOP has held the House except for a brief four-year period between 2006 and 2010, the year of the Tea Party Revolt.

Democrats are going to have to sit helplessly by while Republicans pass conservative legislation and they will be powerless to stop it.

The House Democratic leadership resembles the Soviet Politburo, aged, wedded to ideas of the past. Eventually, a young reformer named Mikhail Gorbachev became General Secretary and tried to bring communism into modern times. But by that time it was too late. Ronald Reagan was well on his way to fulfilling his promise to place the Soviet Empire on the ash heap of history.

The Democrats are going to have to change, to become more moderate, less elitist, more in touch with the ordinary people, or their party will die. So far, House Democrats have opted for slow motion suicide.
