Anti-abortionists have been ecstatic ever since the new Republican president-elect, Donald Trump, was named the 45th president of the United States of America. Since the election, he has addressed many of the social issues that concern many Americans, one being abortion. He recently mentioned his desire to appoint justices that are anti-abortion, ultimately abolishing Roe v. Wade.

Roe v. Wade

Back in the 1960’s, many women were dangerously obtaining illegal abortions or attempting the procedure themselves, which caused many pregnancy and childbirth-related deaths. In 1973, Roe v. Wade was the turning point Supreme Court case that legalized abortion.

It declared the Constitutional right for women to privately make their own medical decisions regarding their body. Since, other laws have been passed that make obtaining an abortion after the second trimester of pregnancy illegal. Nevertheless, Planned Parenthood health centers offer professional, safe, and comprehensive services for women exercising their Constitutional right to abortion.

Could it be overturned?

Although the 1973 ruling made legal abortion the law of the land, Donald Trump has the intent to reverse this ruling, despite how reversing laws that are already in place can be an extremely tough process. Trump’s plan is to appoint judges to the Supreme Court that are pro-life, which would gradually diminish access to abortion and ultimately satisfy his goal of overturning its legality.

If Roe v. Wade were overturned, Trump said that the legality of abortion would remain up to the state. This would make women who live in a state where abortion was illegal to have to go to another state for its obtainment, granted they have the financial ability.

Whether Roe v. Wade will return to the Supreme Court in Trump’s presidency is unknown.

However, whether or not it does, despite those who oppose abortion as a legal right, many women continue to fight for the rights to their body. Since the new president-elect was declared, Planned Parenthood donations have skyrocketed.
