Police arrested a young mother after her 2-year-old son shot his 1-year-old sister while inside a car at a strip mall. The children were there with their mother and the mother's boyfriend. The toddler picked up the loaded gun, which he had found in the vehicle, and accidentally shot his toddler sibling.

Shot in the car

According to CBS News the Shooting happened while the mother Crystal Kinchen, 23, was occupied on her cell phone. The car was parked at a strip mall in East Baton Rouge and the mother said when the gun went off it sounded like a fire cracker. The mother's boyfriend looked inside the car where he saw the 1-year-old girl lying on the floor of the vehicle.

It was obvious that she suffered a gunshot wound to her face.

Gunshot wound in the face

The mother and the boyfriend rushed the toddler girl to the Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition, according to the Daily Mail. They had called 911, but opted to drive the baby to the hospital rather than wait for the emergency services to show up. The strip mall is located North Foster Drive and Greenwell Springs Road.

Mother arrested

The mother has been booked on charges of second degree cruelty to a juvenile. She remains in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. It is not known how the 2-year-old boy was able to get a hold of the loaded gun or where the gun was stored inside the car.

The police are still investigating the shooting of this toddler by her toddler sibling today.

Similar case last year

This incident is so similar to one that happened last year in Florida when a 3-year-old boy was left in a car with his 1-year-old sister. According to USA Today from an article last year, the boy shot his sister in the face when they found a gun that was left in the car.

The boy somehow got a hold of the gun and fired off a round, which struck his 1-year-old sister in the face. The siblings were alone in the car at the time.

This little girl was rushed to the hospital and thankfully she was said to have "non-life-threatening injuries" at the time. The mother was not in the car when the shooting took place and that shooting was also investigated.
