At around 9:30AM on Saturday, September 17th, an explosion could be heard erupting somewhere near the coast. Authorities were able to isolate the location of the blast to a parking garage located at D Street near Ocean Avenue in Seaside Park. According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, no injuries were sustained as a direct result of the blast though it was audible for some distance and caused a great deal of concern for human life. The improvised explosive device used in this incident is said to have been fashioned in the shape of a "pipe bomb."

Potential terror link

The location of the blast was along the route of the 3rd Annual Marine Semper Fi 5K Race route and given the proximity, this incident is being investigated as a possible act of terror.

Local law enforcement are currently working with the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Department of Homeland Security to ensure that the area near this incident is safe, evidence is collected, and any possible suspects are apprehended.

At this time, the New Jersey State Bomb Squad is investigating a suspicious package which was located in the vicinity of the blast and which authorities believe could be related. The local community around this area of Seaside Park has been evacuated while investigations continue.

It is unclear whether the bomb squad has determined the suspicious package to be an armed explosive device or not.
