Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was at a fundraiser in New York attended by some of the more well-heeled in the LGBT community when she told them exactly what she thinks of tens of millions of Americans who support her opponent, Donald Trump. She suggested that one could put half of Trump supporters into the “basket of deplorables” and went on to call them “Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.”

The statement, which is already being compared to Mitt Romney’s now infamous “47 percent” observation, also at a fundraiser, has caused a social media firestorm and debate on the regular media.

Some are suggesting that Clinton is exposing her deep contempt for millions of Americans in flyover country who do not, for whatever reason, support her. Her partisans are trying to defend her by suggesting that, in effect, much of Trump’s fan base are a bunch of bigots who need to be put in their place by electing Hillary Clinton.

The jokes are going fast and furious. One of them has Clinton mimicking a character from “Silence of the Lambs” and hissing, “It puts the deplorables in the basket!”

Trump has attracted media ire for his open admiration of Vladimir Putin, a criticism somewhat undermined by the recent “agreement” with Russia over the Syria question, and his suggestion that Iranian speedboats who buzz American naval vessels should be blown out of the water.

But now, conveniently, Clinton has provided his campaign a juicy topic to discuss to Trump’s advantage.

Trump has created a lot of mileage for himself by connecting to working and middle-class voters with a coarse, sometimes vulgar campaign style that expresses empathy for their economic plight. It is a remarkable feat for a billionaire real estate tycoon and reality TV star.

At the same time, he has successfully painted Clinton as an out of touch elitist who has sold out to Wall Street fat cats and dubious tyrants from foreign countries for her own enrichment. By slandering millions of Trump supporters, Clinton has neatly played into his hands and has buttressed that unsavory image.
