As the Daily Caller noted, Donald Trump pulled one over on the media. He announced that he would appear in the presidential ballroom of the Trump International Hotel in Washington and address the so-called birther issue. Trump once had lots of fun with the idea that President Barack Obama was actually born in Kenya and not Hawaii. Naturally, the media was very interested because a major presidential candidate trafficking in conspiracy theories is always something fun to cover.

Before the event that the press showed up for occurred, Trump trotted out a large group of veterans, Medal of Honor winners, generals, and a gold star wife to sing his praises. The candidate had fooled the media into covering live what was, in effect, an infomercial for his campaign.

Only toward the end did Trump address what the media had come to hear.

First, he made a dig at his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it.” The first statement is true. The 2008 Clinton campaign did spread the rumor that Obama was born in Kenya. The second sentence was breathtaking in its audacity. Trump is implying that he forced Obama to produce a proper birth certificate only to put to rest the ugly conspiracy theory concocted by Clinton. He was actually teasing the conspiracy theory to get himself on television and himself talked about.

Donald Trump

Is Trump satisfied? Yes, he is. “President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period. Now we all want to get back to making America strong again.” Then Trump left the stage while the ladies and gentlemen of the press shouted questions and then went to social media to express their outrage at being manipulated and fooled.

One thing is sure. The usual contentious relationship between the press and a Republican president is going to be white hot should Trump be elected.

But while Nixon railed at the media, Reagan made jokes about them, and the two Bushes tried to ignore them, Trump seems ready to rumble, using his mastery of the industry to make the press dance to his tune. However else the Trump years proceed, the spectacle will be entertaining to watch.
