Shanynthia Gardner has been charged with multiple offenses related to the stabbing deaths of her four children. The 29-year-old Tennessee mother was arrested and now faces four counts of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated neglect after sheriff deputies discovered the children’s bodies.

A grisly scene.

Early Friday afternoon, police answered a 911 call at a Memphis apartment complex and raced to the scene. When deputies arrived, the children were found dead with “severe throat lacerations.” Police did not ask for ambulances because it was clear the children were deceased.

The victims were 6-month-old Yahzi; Sya, 3; Sahvi, 2; and Tallen, 4.

An obvious attacker.

Gardner, who had several wounds on the neck and wrists, was arrested on the scene. A bloody butcher knife was also recovered from the apartment’s kitchen. Authorities say Gardner may be charged with additional crimes.

"One of the most difficult questions in any investigation always is, why did it occur?" Shelby County Bill Oldham said, according to WMC Action News. “This is an egregious act of evil that has shocked us to our core."

Lone survivor.

One boy, 7-year-old Dallen, was able to run from the home and escape the gruesome attack.

Several people outside saw the young boy screaming for help and yelling that his sister was hurt. Armed with a knife, Gardner left the apartment in pursuit, but turned and went back inside, said one witness. Dallen is unharmed and in the care of other family members.

No other suspects.

While police are still determining if anyone else was in the apartment, Gardner’s husband and father to the four slain children was not home at the time.

He was questioned by investigatorsbut has not been charged with a Crime. The boy who survived the deadly assault has a different father.

Ongoing investigation.

During processing of the scene Friday, police closed one section of the apartment complex, only allowing residents and reporters to enter the area.

A nearby golf course was also closed. Officials with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services did not have any documentation of violence involving Gardner and had no record of ever being in contact with the family.

Community rocked by tragedy.

The grievous attack committed by Shanynthia Gardner is one of the worst cases of violence the county has seen in a very long time. Members of the community are still perplexed and shocked such a heinous act could occur in their quiet neighborhood. A candlelight vigil was held for the victims on Friday night.

To help raise money for the funerals, a Go Fund Me campaign has also been set up.
