The world's greatest basketball player of all time and owner of the Charlotte Hornets, Michael Jordan says he is "deeply troubled" by the recent violence that has taken place in Dallas, Baton Rouge, LA., and Minnesota according to the New York Times on July 25, 2016.

He is not only disgusted at the killings of African-Americans by police, but he is also distraught over the senseless killings of police officers as well.

In the statement that was originally released to The Undefeated, an ESPN website that is dedicated to the intersection of race and sports, he says he will be making a $1 million donations to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund as well as a $1 million donation to the Institute for Community-Police Relations.

What he said:

In his statement, Mr. Jordan spoke about his respect for law enforcement while at the same time acknowledging the discrimination that African-Americans face from police officers.

He wrote, "As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers.”

He continued the statement by saying, "Over the past three decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family, I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service.

I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine.”

Any statement made on a political issue by Michael Jordan is very rare as he tries his hardest to stay away from any controversy; however, it appears he was tired of biting his tongue on this one.

His statement was well received by civil rights leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson and fans everywhere, but just like everyone else who takes a stand and voices their opinion on a controversial issue, he has also opened himself up to backlash from those who did not like what his statement said or where his donations are going.
