Ever since the rise of the Tea Party movement in 2010, far right-wing conservatives have amped up their attacks on the federal government. One example is Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who for years refused to pay federal grazing fees which resulted in an armed standoff with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in 2014.

Bundy and Obama

In debt over $1 million in unpaid grazing fees, Bundy faced off with BLM officials in 2014. Defenders of Bundy stood by his side, armed and ready to fight. Not wanting to engage in a shootout with civilians, the BLM decided to back off.

It wasn't until earlier this year that Bundy was finally arrested when the disgraced rancher was on his way to be by the side of his son, Ammon Bundy, who had helped occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in rural Burns, Oregon. As reported by The Hill on May 10, Bundy is now taking legal action against President Obama and Nevada Sen. Harry Reid.

Bundy's lawyer will officially file the lawsuit on Tuesday in a court in Nevada, alleging that the president and other state officials violated the rancher's constitution rights.

The legal team will push for Bundy to be released from his current state of solitary confinement and ask for his indictment to be dismissed. Bundy's lawyer will address the media following a hearing in Law Vegas on Tuesday.

Bundy's controversial history

Cliven Bundy alleges that his family are descendants of the Mayflower Pilgrams, and claims he has rights to his land that shouldn't be subjected to federal taxes and fines. Bundy has 14 children, and is a devout Mormon and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Being such a religious man, Bundy has openly stated that the standoff with the BLM was part of "God's plan" and a result of "divine intervention."

Despite initially being supported by conservative host Sean Hannity and others on the Fox News Channel, Bundy's racial remarks have forced the network to distance themselves. Bundy once referred to African-Americans as the "negro," who "abort their young children" and "put their young men in jail" because they were never properly taught "how to pick cotton."
