Bruce Springsteen announced Friday, April 08, 2016, that he is cancelling this weekend’s upcoming concert in Greensboro, North Carolina. Springsteen is one of many LGBT supporters giving North Carolina the snub after they passed House Bill 2, the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, also known as the ‘Bathroom Bill’. Paypal announced on Tuesday, April 5th, it was abandoning its plans to build a new global operations facility in Charlotte, North Carolina in response to the same bill.

What is House Bill 2?

House Bill 2, the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, was signed into law on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 by the governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory. The act requires men and women to use the restroom according to their biological sex. Essentially, if your birth certificate says you were born a male, you must use the men’s restroom even if you have had sex reassignment surgery to become a woman.

This prevents any transgendered person (an individual who was born biologically as one gender, but gender identifies as the other gender) from using the restroom of their gender identity. The bill was passed during an emergency session by the state House and state Senate on March 23rd. The state House passed the vote 82-26, while the state Senate passed the vote 32-0. In a show of protest, state Senate Democrats refused to vote and walked out.
