How to talk like a buccaneer

To talk like a buccaneer of old times, growl and scowl often, talk with your hands and blur lingo together. Favorite phrases include:

  • “Ahoy, me hearties!” translates to Hey friends.
  • “Heave ho,” translates to use your muscles.
  • “Weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen,” means let’s get going.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday that began in 2002 when John Bauer and Mark Summers asked Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Dave Barry to write about their idea for the "Miami Herald." The idea was born when one of them was injured in a racquetball game in 1995 and screamed out, "Aaaarrr!" The two continued to scream out pirate ramblings and decided it was something they needed to make a tradition. The idea springs from a romantic view of "The Golden Age of Piracy." They chose Summer's ex-wife's birthday as the official day as it would be an easy day for him to remember.

It all started as a joke

What started as a joke among friends has gained international exposure since Barry's column. Books and T-shirts are available for sale on the International Talk Like a Pirate website. In addition to freebies at national chains and local events, many games and websites have promoted the day. Facebook and Google offer a pirate language and Reddit also added a pirate atmosphere to it's website. Antivirus provider Avast gives users the option to select Pirate Talk as the language.
