I want to exercise more. At least, that’s what I tell myself when I’m buttoning my jeans in the morning. In actual fact, I don’t want to exercise more; I just want the results of having exercised more.

Many of us are like that about success. We want the results without doing what it takes to have them.

It’s easy to overlook one of the main factors in success. That is the influence of habit.

Successful people rarely become that way by accident. In the same way that physically fitness won’t fall out of the sky and land on you, neither will business, relationship, academic, or any other kind of success.

You have to get in the habit of doing things that actually move you toward your goals. In fact, you need to get in the habit of making the right activities a habit.

The concept of creating habits may make you groan. After all, the word isn’t even very tantalizing. But we do things habitually every day, often in the same sequence.

Get out of bed, make a coffee, and drink the coffee while reading the news. Shower, dress, brush teeth, grab car keys. All of these actions become habits that develop over a short period of time, generally only a few weeks.

Imagine what your days would be like if you had to figure out how to do those activities all over again every morning. Habits make life easier.

Good habits can make your life more successful.

Think about what you would like to accomplish and why it’s important to you. The “why” is vital, as you won’t likely follow through if you’re not compelled by a significant motive.

If you want to get fit, you might get in the habit of going for a walk before breakfast. If your goal is to have more success in your business or job, you may want to make a habit of calling ten more clients before 10:00 AM.

Ask yourself what habits will contribute to moving you forward.

Only you know which habits will make your life better, but developing habits of actions that take you toward your goals is a good place to start. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Drink some lemon water in the morning. It will help alkalinize your body.
  2. Exercise before breakfast.
  3. Eat a decent breakfast of real food, not junk or just coffee.
  4. Make a list of what you want to accomplish.
  5. Listen to a motivational talk, pray, meditate, or have a few minutes of quiet.
  6. Smile at yourself in the mirror and choose to make it a great day.
