For a young man not yet 25, Byron Major has a pretty impressive CV. In 2005, the rising star shared a stage as a member of the Drakensberg Boys Choir with Luciano Pavarotti. Eight years later, he performed at a birthday celebration for Nelson Mandela in Boston. He also attended the famed Berklee College of Music where he once sang alongside Grammy Award winning songwriter, Paula Cole.

Taking music to new heights

"I am currently studying for my Master's in Musicology at the University of Pretoria," reveals the keen academic, who hopes to have a full-length album out soon.

"It's a pure research degree and I will be focusing onthe life and career of South African jazz pianist, Dr Abdullah Ibrahim. I believe every musician in the 21st century should equip themselves with the necessary education and knowledge to take their career and art form to new heights."

A flower in spring

Asked to comment on the new single, the Johannesburg-born musician states, "May Flower' expresses the push and pull that people sometimes experience in passionate relationships. The tagline for the chorus is 'April showers bring May flowers,' and this metaphorically talks about how the tears cried by lovers can be like the rainfall in winter that is essential for the growth of something naturally beautiful to emerge from it, such as a flower in spring."

The power of music

I wondered what the artist remembers most about helping to commemorate Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday and performing with the late Luciano Pavarotti 11 years ago.

"Performing at Nelson Mandela's birthday celebration in Boston was the first time I was truly humbled by what the power of music can do to make a difference in our world, by connecting people from all walks of life and unifying them for the betterment of the human race," he replied. "I remember that Pavarotti was driven around in a golf cart to get to and from rehearsals..."

"May Flower" will be available to buy or download on April 15th.

And, in the meantime, Byron Major is certainly one to watch.
