An experiment co-led by Jeremy Nicholson from the Imperial College London, in which Africans and US citizens swap diets, proved to reach a staggering health conclusions for the subjects involved in the research. Apparently, the lifestyle habits of these particular groups seem to determine the percent in which they are predisposed to colon cancer - consuming foods specific to Western diets has been shown to increase the risk of colon cancer, while its African counterpart has proven to minimize the risk.

A group of Black Americans switched their diet to an African diet over the span of two weeks, and the results were astonishing. The African diet is rich in fibers, essential for a healthy lifestyle. This first group has recorded a great drop when it comes to colon cancer risks.

Likewise, a group of Africans switched their diet habits to the Western way. They started eating foods specific to Americans, such as animal protein or foods rich in fat. Over the same period of time while the experiment lasted, this group recorded a rise in the risk for colon cancer, as stated in Nature Communications Journal.

According to researchers, these fluctuations in the risk factors were not all that surprising, knowing the positive effect of consuming more fiber, but the magnitude of the changes was staggering. They did not expect such dramatic differences over the span of just two weeks.

The results of the experiment also posed a large concern - the so-called "Westernization" of the African diets may increase the risk of colon cancer in an area where the risk was significantly smaller compared to Western countries.

The main reason why the risk percent changed so dramatically is because the bacteria present in the gut - the so-called microbiome - was forced to change the metabolism in order to adapt to the new diet for the subjects that followed the Western diet.

On the other end of the spectrum, the African diet caused an increase in the production of butyrate for its subjects, which is a by-product that has valuable anti-cancer properties.
