If you're waiting for a package to arrive in time for Christmas you may be out of luck if it wasn't shipped Express Mail. Although letter carriers from the USPS will be out on Christmas Eve delivering mail, all post office branches will be closed on Sunday, December 25 and Monday, December 26 in observance of the federal holiday.

Any mail that is due to be delivered on Saturday, December 24 will arrive on time (barring any delays) but the USPS will only deliver Express Mail on Christmas. The same goes for Monday — it's one of 10 federal holidays and when the holiday falls on a Sunday, the post office closes up shop the following day.

U.S. Post Office locations close early on Christmas Eve

If you need to buy stamps, ship out a package, or check your post office box, get to your local post office branch by 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve or you will find the doors locked until Tuesday. Any mail dropped into collection boxes will be picked up according to the schedule on the box but it won't be processed through the USPS mail system until Tuesday if it's dropped after Noon on December 24.

Monday is a Federal holiday

The post office isn't the only thing closing up on Monday, December 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. Most banks will be closed until Tuesday, with limited hours on Christmas Eve. Most federal and state offices will also be closed on Monday, including the DMV or RMV, all Social Security offices, the IRS, and the Department of Human Services.

Is anything open on Christmas?

Although most major retail stores like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will close on Christmas Eve and reopen on Monday, there are a few stores that will be open for last-minute holiday shoppers. However, your choices will be limited to convenience stores, 7-11, and most CVS stores.

If you want to skip the dishes and go out to eat, there's a good chance you will find some restaurants open in your area. All Denny's, Golden Corral, Bucca di Beppo, and IHOP restaurants are open on Sunday — check this list to find more restaurants open December 25.
