More details of Razer’s first mobile device – a Gaming smartphone as some mobile and gaming analysts suggested – is coming out in the open. The upcoming RAZER Phone was first teased last month from no less than the company’s founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan.

“One of the most hotly rumored things about Razer is that we're coming up with a mobile device. And I can say that we are coming up with a mobile device specifically geared toward gamers and entertainment,” Tan said during an interview with CNBC’s Managing Asia.

First look at Razer Phone

With the acquisition of Nextbit early this year and shutting down its cloud-based smartphone Nextbit Robin last August, it was clear that Razer has something up its sleeves.

And according to several reports, Razer’s latest project is a powerful mobile device tagged as a gaming smartphone.

Last weekend, the first picture of the Razer Phone surfaced. According to Slovak-based tech website TechByte.sk, the Razer Phone closely resembles Nextbit Robin, the first and only Android smartphone manufactured by Nextbit.

The picture only shows the back of the Razer Phone which confirms the presence of a dual camera next to the LED flash. The camera system’s layout is horizontally-aligned just like an iPhone 8 though it will be hard to determine the kind of sensors and camera lenses that are integrated.

There were also two buttons placed on the left side (when facing front), the placement does not suggest that those are the volume keys. Knowing Razer, the upcoming smartphone is believed to be more of a mobile gaming device than anything else. And then there’s the familiar triple-headed snake – the iconic logo of Razer.

Gaming smartphone

Last week, the specifications of the purported gaming smartphone of Razer surfaced. In addition to having a dual setup of the back camera, it is said to be able to capture 11MP (4032 x 3024) of high-resolution images and relive the moments with its 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video. The front camera can grab 7MP (3264 x 2448) high-res images and QXGA (2048 x 1536) video.

The camera system is supported with features like autofocus, face detection, and touch focus among others.

In addition, this gaming smartphone will have a 5.7-inch (2560 x 1440) display with touchscreen ability of at least five-finger gesture support. Also, this Razer Phone will be pre-installed with Android 7.1.1 at launch.

The Razer Phone is said to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (octa-core @2.4GHz); however, there are conflicting reports about its memory and storage capacity. GFXBench.com reported a 7.5GB RAM and 49GB storage while TechByte.sk suggested an 8GB RAM and 64GB storage. According to some mobile phone analysts, one possible reason for having a low storage capacity is that Razer might tap Nextbit’s cloud storage.

The upcoming Razer Phone is expected to be unveiled this coming Nov. 1. We’ll bring you more details of this gaming smartphone as it becomes available.
