NBA legend Michael Jordan posted a short but powerful letter to Russell Westbrook, who earned the Most Valuable Player award from the NBA on Monday evening. Jordan compared himself to the Oklahoma City Thunder player.

In the short letter, which was typewritten, printed out and sent to Westbrook, Jordan first congratulated the OKC player then proceeded to say that he also got his first MVP award before he won a championship.

Jordan had a total of five MVP awards and the first was in 1988. He then won his first championship in 1991. Westbrook did not yet comment publicly on the package sent to him by Jordan.

How Russell Westbrook fared in the last NBA season

Westbrook played exceptionally well during the past season for the Oklahoma City Thunder and experts took notice of that since Kevin Durant decided to play for the Golden State Warriors. Despite that setback for his team, he was able to average 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists. The frontrunner for the MVP award was James Harden of the Houston Rockets.

Speaking of Durant, he also congratulated Westbrook by saying, "Huge congrats to Russell Westbrook on MVP, that boy went out there and was a created player on 2k all year, F---in balled out.

Gotta respect it!" It is unclear if Westbrook personally talked to Durant after the latter congratulated the former publicly.

Russell Westbrook gets Jordan shoes

Aside from the letter, Westbrook also received a pair of Jordan Brand shoes, which is manufactured by Nike. The package and the letter were posted on the Jordan Brand Twitter account.

OKC player emotional during acceptance speech

Twenty-eight-year-old Westbrook is the second player from Oklahoma City Thunder to receive the MVP award. During his acceptance speech, he thanked God, the owner of OKC, the general manager, and the coach. He also thanked the trainers and the support staff, his teammates, and lastly, his family.

He said he promised he would not cry if he ever won but got emotional when he talked about the overwhelming support he received especially from his parents and his wife.

Westbrook can choose to opt out of his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder next summer as he has a player option on it. If he rejects it, he will become an unrestricted free agent. He is yet to comment on the contract extension with the Thunder. Reports claimed the Oklahoma City Thunder will come up with a massive contract extension in order to keep their MVP on the team.
