Tragedy struck the Heap family yesterday afternoon when former Pro Bowler Todd Heap accidentally backed his truck over his own 3-year old daughter, killing her. Police in Mesa, Arizona confirmed that the accident happened in the driveway of Heap's home located in a gated community in Las Sendas.
Child's death considered accidental
Mesa police confirmed that they responded to call on Friday around 3:45 p.m. regarding an accident involving a car and a pedestrian. When police arrived, they were told that Todd Heap's 3-year old daughter was in the driveway when Heap went to move the car.
He did not see her there or know she was outside when he accidentally ran her over. The girl was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to authorities, Todd Heap was not impaired at the time of the accident. However, there is an ongoing investigation into the accident. Heap and his wife Ashley have five children together. It was their youngest who was killed in this accident. Heap was described as a devout Mormon and one of six siblings himself.
Ravens, Cardinals react to death of Todd Heap's daughter
