Almost everyone thought that the Dallas Cowboys would release Tony Romo and he would sign with the Houston Texans and try to win his first Super Bowl with another team. That never happened and Romo retired from the NFL to become the number one color commentator for CBS NFL football. That means that Dak Prescott now has to prove that he is worth the gamble that Dallas made on him and can become the next Troy Aikman or Roger Staubach. Even if he reaches the impressive levels of Romo, it might not be enough for the demanding fans of the Cowboys.

Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott’s pressure

Ever since Troy Aikman retired, the Dallas Cowboys spent many years trying to find his replacement. They looked for draft picks like Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson and they brought it veterans like Drew Bledsoe and Vinny Testaverde. None of those names were able to win games for the Cowboys. Then, they finally found their franchise quarterback in an undrafted free agent named Tony Romo. He came in and led the Cowboys to the playoffs in his first season as a starter. While he spent most of his career labeled as a man who couldn’t win in the playoffs, he shattered Cowboys passing records and most of the failure to win a Super Bowl was because of the lack of talent around him and not with the lack of talent of Tony Romo.

However, as he proved, Cowboys fans can be ruthless if you don’t win a championship and now Dak Prescott will witness that firsthand. However, if Prescott turns in the kind of performance he did in 2016, he could become the Cowboys' new favorite son.

Dak Prescott in 2017 for the Cowboys

That leads the Dallas Cowboys and their fans to the 2017 NFL season.

Most Cowboys fans wanted Tony Romo gone and the offense handed over to the superstar rookie. Now that Romo is gone, Dak Prescott will learn what pressure is really like in Dallas. The Cowboys fans can be horrible when players struggle so if Prescott suffers any sophomore jitters, he might hear endless boos from home fans. However, the one thing that will hang over Dak’s head the entire season is that Romo never went to another team and there will always be fans who wonder if he could return and save them if Prescott falters.

There is almost no chance of that happening, so Cowboys fans will have to hope Dak improves in his second season and becomes the quarterback that everyone hopes that he can be. The big thing to keep in mind is that the Cowboys biggest weakness is on defense, so even if Dak plays well, the Cowboys could still struggle once again.
