The world of professional wrestling lost another icon as Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017. The WWE Hall of Famer has been battling stomach cancer for a very long time and it eventually was be too much.

Snuka wrestled for the majority of a 40 year period as he began his career back in the '70s. It wasn't until 2010 that he finally gave it up due to his age and illness making it impossible for his in-ring career to continue.

Snuka's murder case recently dropped.

Even though his wrestling career is one that he will be known for throughout eternity, Snuka's name has been in the news for years due to other reasons.

Snuka had been charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the 1983 death of Nancy Argentino, his then-girlfriend.

Less than two weeks ago, the murder charge was dismissed by a judge due to Snuka being ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial. His legal team had long argued that his terminal cancer had affected his mind and he only had months to live.

It now seems as if they weren't just using his illness as a defense, but that Jimmy Snuka really was on death's door. At least he was able to spend the last days of his life knowing that he would not be convicted of murder.

Jimmy Snuka's family has a long history in wrestling

The name Snuka is synonymous with wrestling and it isn't just because of "Superfly." Over the years, many of his family members have stepped into the ring for WWE and other companies to carry on the legacy.

Tamina Snuka is Jimmy's daughter and she is currently on the main roster for WWE. She wrestles on the "Monday Night Raw" brand and has been with the company since back in 2010.

From 2005 until 2009, Snuka's son was with WWE as part of a tag team called Deuce 'n Domino. Together, they won the WWE Tag Team Championship before parting ways and Deuce moving to the "Raw " brand. From there, he was renamed Sim Snuka and ended up being released about a year later.

The Snuka family is linked by marriage to the incredible wrestling family known as the Anoa'i.

That family includes such relatives as Rikishi, The Headshrinkers, Roman Reigns, The Usos, and The Rock.
