There may not be a better tournament in sports than March Madness. The 68 team field gives plenty of teams a chance to not just make some noise on a national stage, but also a chance at a Final Four. Teams like VCU and George Mason have shocked the country in the past and it's just part of the magic of a tournament that has produced some incredible moments over the years. Let's take a look at the ten mid-major teams with the best shot of winning some tournament games in March.

1. Gonzaga

Can we even consider this program a mid-major anymore? Mark Few's program consistently makes the tournament every single year and is having one of its best years in 2017. Currently ranked #3, the Zags are still undefeated at 20-0 and will get a high seed in the tournament. The Zags also own quality wins over Florida, Iowa State, Arizona, and St. Mary's. A common criticism of the Zags is that their schedule is too easy, but they answered critics with those wins early on. The only question now is: Will the Zags finally get to the Final Four?

2. St. Mary's

The Gaels are the second best program in the WCC and that's not a bad thing.

The program achieved its highest ever national ranking this season and have played some great Basketball to get to 17-2 this season. The program ranks second in the country in points allowed, behind only Virginia, which has contributed to their current ranking of 21 in the nation. St. Mary's owns quality wins over Dayton and Stanford, but also has a tough loss to UT-Arlington as a blemish on the resume. Still, the Gaels will be a tough opponent for anyone to face when March Madness comes around.

3. UNC Wilmington.

Anybody who draws UNCW this season is going to be in for a rough game. This team nearly pulled off an upset of Duke as a 13 seed in the first round of the NCAA tournament and has the offensive firepower to compete with anybody.

The Seahawks have just two losses, one to Clemson and one to fellow mid-major Middle Tennessee. Neither of those losses are particularly bad, but UNC Wilmington doesn't have a signature win to enhance its resume. Still, it's going to be tough for major programs to take down UNC Wilmington if they do manage to win the CAA.

4. New Mexico State.

How can you not be scared of a mid-major team that has strung together 16 straight victories? NMSU hasn't lost since a November 19th road loss to New Mexico and has looked dominant in the process. The Aggies are first in the WAC and boast an 18-2 record with quality victories over Arizona State, New Mexico, and UC Irvine. New Mexico State has struggled to accomplish the upset in March Madness, but the team is absolutely playing good enough basketball to make some noise in the tournament.

5. Florida Gulf Coast.

Remember them? I definitely do as a Georgetown fan. FGCU made one of the most memorable mid-major runs of all time as a 15 seed by winning games against both Georgetown and SDSU, the furthest a 15 seed had ever advanced in the tournament. And they did it in spectacular fashion, impressively dunking their way to both victories. And this season the Eagles have shown that they can take tough opponents on, playing close games against MSU and Baylor. They've also played Florida, Lasalle. If FGCU manages to win their conference tournament, the committee will likely reward them for the tough schedule they played early in the year. That could spell doom for 3,4, and 5 seeds that will have to fight against an electric team with previous NCAA tournament experience.
