Its been just a little over three years now since “Sons of Anarchy” aired its final episode. In that time, there have been plenty of rumors regarding a potential spin-off Series. Well, about a year or so into those rumors, it was announced that "Sons" creator Kurt Sutter would be co-developing a spin-off series based on the Mayans MC. Fans, of course, remember the Mayans from the original series, as they played an integral role throughout. After that initial announcement, things began to get quiet regarding the new show. This show has supposedly been in the works for well over a year.

Over the summer it was announced that a pilot was filmed but was then scrapped and re-shot for various reasons. This is not uncommon, especially when it comes to "Sons," as the original pilot for that show was also re-shot completely. Finally, it was just announced that this new spin-off series titled “Mayans MC” has been ordered for a 10 episode season and is slated to release in late summer, or early fall of 2018.

What this new show will entail

Initially, when I first heard about this spin-off series, I wasn’t all that excited. While the Mayans in the original show played a huge part, they were never really captivating enough for me to want a series based solely on them. It wasn’t until the synopsis was released that I started to get excited.

The synopsis reads, “Set in a post-Jax Teller world, EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel and his need for respect from the woman he loves.”

There is one part of this synopsis that gets me the most excited. The fact that it is set in a post-Jax Teller world creates so many story opportunities.

If fans like myself have any hope of seeing some of the original "Sons" characters in this new series, this is the best chance. We know that the "Sons of Anarchy" MC is still kicking after the finale, so there is a very good chance we see some familiar faces appear at some point in this new series. Maybe not right away in the first season but if this new show struggles at any point, it has the ability to intertwine with some of the "Sons" members or even focus on stories that could bring fans back in.

I’m not one to dismiss a show right away without seeing it. Like any new show, you have to give it a chance. It could blow us away or fall flat on its face. While being a spin-off to a hit show can be a bad thing, it can also be used to its advantage. Like I already said, whenever the writers feel like fans aren’t really connecting anymore, they have the ability to play off some of the "Sons" nostalgia.

Casting news and final thoughts

The main character of EZ Reyes will be played by J.D. Pardo and he’s followed alongside names like Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby and Antonio Jaramillo. With the exception of Olmos, this cast is mostly new names you may have never heard of.

While this could scare some fans, let’s not forget that Charlie Hunnam was also a new face when "SOA" first aired. It has also been teased that the series will feature "SOA" vet Emilio Rivera as he will once again portray Marcus Alvarez. Rumor has it that Alvarez will play the uncle of main character EZ Reyes. The more I hear about this new series, the more excited I get. "Sons" was by far one of my favorite shows of all-time, so anything in that world has me intrigued. What about you? Are you excited?
